SEO optimization on your website is often the difference between success and failure.
People are searching – and never come across your website.
Why is that?
Can you find your website on the internet without typing the exact domain name?
Why SEO (search engine optimization)?
Most people underrate the importance of search engine optimization. They only realize it’s valued when they see their competitors’ websites come up on top in a Google, Yahoo or Bing search, and their website is nowhere to be seen on the first 2 pages.
Having said that – What good is your website if no one can find it?
Simply explained…
Think of your website as a store on a street where people see the sign as they drive by. The traffic on that street is one way of bringing traffic in through the doors.
These days people are doing their searches online to find what they need. To find you they need to be on your street (website) and to get there they need to see it (on the first page of their search results).
What is SEO?
SEO is not magic. Search engine optimization takes time and effort.
First, it requires ethical, honest practices and efforts over a period of a few months. Successful SEO requires a fine balance of optimizing your website for your visitors/customers and search engines. If search engines discover you are using unethical practices such as hidden text you will be penalized, and worst-case scenario, removed from the search index.
FIVE STEPS you can manage on your own for website page strategies.
Search engines use algorithm scores to rank your website.
1) Research to find the best keywords for your site. Here are several free options:
- Moz Keyword Explorer – the best all-around free SEO keyword research tool
- Google Keyword Planner – researching for paid keywords
- QuestionDB – find question-based keywords
- Keyword Surfer – a free SEO keyword research browser extension
2) Good Page Content – what you write matters
You may have heard the saying – Content is King. The keywords you just found in step one are what search engines use to find websites that are relevant to what keywords searchers use.
- Write articles about benefits, or educate on topics that build your authority on the topic. Post these on your website or provide the article to quality organizations that can then link back to you. This will provide a backlink which also improves your seo ranking.
- Taking this step you will be feeding your content to the search engines.
3) Add meta titles and descriptions using your best keywords
- These are the words that advertise your company on Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Their algorithms use your keywords to match the relevancy to the keywords used by the searcher. - Most websites allow you to add this through the admin side of your website.
- If you own a WordPress website you will need to install an SEO plugin.
3) Links to your site
Links to your website are similar to saying they are voting for you or referring you.
- Links from other reputable and authoritative websites will improve your SEO score.
- Ask for a link from other blogs – ask them to include your keywords in the link.
4) Social Media
- Links from your Social Media back to your website count as inbound links, which also improves your score and moves you up in the ranks.
5) Add your profile to a directory
- Look for reputable and authoritative websites in your industry.
- Make sure they aren’t selling your name to other organizations.
